DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Staten Island Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible crown repair systems for most common chimney configurations found in Staten Island homes, with typical installed pricing between $380 and $780 depending on flue diameter and access height. Most DuraFlex crown jobs we book are completed in a single visit because our trucks carry the full range of stainless and galvanized crown components for 6-inch through 12-inch round flues. You usually discover the crown has failed when you spot water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace after a hard rain, or when your sweep shows you crumbling mortar and exposed flue tile during a routine cleaning.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns are not universal. The part you need depends on whether your system is DuraFlex SW (stainless steel, .005-inch wall) or DuraFlex HT (heavy-duty, .012-inch wall), and whether your flue is round, oval, or transitioning between shapes. SW series crowns fit the lighter-duty liners common in gas and oil venting; HT series crowns are built for wood-burning applications with higher thermal expansion cycles. Check the collar stamp near the top termination, or measure the flue outer diameter with a tape measure while the chimney is cool.

We carry OEM DuraFlex crown assemblies from Copperfield Supply, plus compatible aftermarket crowns from Gelco that match DuraFlex dimensions exactly and carry comparable warranty terms. The aftermarket option typically saves $80 to $140 on parts without sacrificing fit. One compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Staten Island’s older homes, especially around Great Kills and New Dorp: oval-to-round adapter crowns ordered by flange width alone, without accounting for the liner’s wall thickness. A .005-inch SW liner with a .012-inch HT crown will seat poorly and leak within two seasons. We measure twice. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water staining on interior walls or ceiling near the chimney breast. The crown’s seal has degraded, allowing rainwater to track down the flue exterior and saturate surrounding masonry. In Staten Island’s freeze-thaw climate, this accelerates quickly once the crown mortar cracks.
  • White efflorescence blooming on exterior chimney brick below the crown. Salt deposits indicate moisture is moving through the masonry continuously, almost always from a crown that no longer sheds water properly.
  • Visible gaps or missing mortar between the crown wash and the flue tile. The crown is meant to overhang the flue by at least two inches on all sides. When that overhang crumbles, water pours directly onto the masonry below.
  • Rust streaks on a stainless DuraFlex liner visible from the top. This means water is reaching metal that should stay dry, usually because the crown’s storm collar has separated or the caulking has aged out.
  • Musty odor from the fireplace during humid weather. A failing crown lets moisture into the smoke chamber and firebox, where it breeds mold and deteriorates the damper assembly over time.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range
DuraFlex-compatible crown assembly (parts) $140 - $320
Labor: removal, prep, installation $180 - $320
Flashing sealant and mortar repair $60 - $140
Typical total installed $380 - $780

What drives the range: flue height and roof pitch determine how much time we spend on the ladder, and whether the existing crown can be removed cleanly or has bonded to the flue tile and requires careful cutting. We price every job upfront after a Level-2 camera inspection, so the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every crown repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing. If water finds a path we missed, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where it makes no sense. You can check for visible crown damage from the ground with binoculars, and you can verify water stains are tracking from the chimney rather than a roof leak by checking the attic space during rain. What you should not do is climb onto a pitched roof to handle crown mortar, sealants, or flue-mounted components. The crown sits at the highest point of your chimney, often on a surface that slopes in multiple directions, and the mortar work requires troweling while leaning over the flue opening. Falls from roof height are the leading cause of serious injury in home maintenance. We carry the scaffolding, the harness rigs, and the liability coverage so you don’t have to. Call (516) 613-3035 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether this is a this-season repair or something that can wait until your scheduled sweep.
