• Water in the firebox or a damp, musty smell after rain. The cap’s mesh screen can clog with creosote and leaf debris, causing water to pool and eventually breach the seam between cap and collar. On Staten Island’s older homes, this often masquerades as a roof leak until a camera inspection shows the flue wall running wet.
• Downdraft smoke or cold air entering the room. A cap that has shifted even half an inch off-center loses its wind-directional advantage. In the exposed hills of Lighthouse Hill, we’ve measured temperature drops of 15 degrees near the hearth from a tilted cap that looked fine from the ground.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check whether the cap is present and roughly level from the ground with binoculars. You can also verify the liner label from the firebox to confirm your diameter before calling. What you should not do is climb the roof to tighten a band or replace a cap yourself.
